D800 and long exposures

I will be making changes to my blog and the Nikon D800 discussion has been put on hold. I have received more attention for the post about the long exposure issue and  the white dots than I wanted to handle. I’m not inclined to continuously respond to emails about this issue.

I will just say that since the images were posted here I had the chance to confirmed that, with the Camera noise reduction OFF, the white dots always appear in bunches, much more so that other cameras I have used or know of. With NR on, there is no visible noise but that requires double the exposure time.  Rawtherapy software has been suggested as a solution but it is not one I would most likely use for reasons I will not get into now.

Having said this it is very likely I will purchase a D800E as I find it to be excellent for my needs in other regards. Whether it will be the camera I use for long exposures will remain to be seen.

Do not give your images for free

One of the main problems photographers face more and more in requests to hand in the images for free or for pennies. Many of those who seek to use one or more of our images fail to understand that professional photographers make a living with their images and in big part from licensing them. We are also quite frequently asked for detailed advise from aspiring photographers about equipment and techniques without taking into account that we don’t have unlimited time to respond to everyone and that when we do we should be compensated for the information we give out. That is why so many photographers offer workshops, tutorials and online classes to share in a fair manner their knowledge.

These free-loading practices have become common place in our field and are simply rude and highly unprofessional and should be addressed as such.

For the time being I propose you read Tony Wu’s letter to those seeking free images from photographers. I have also translated open letter in Greek as I find it well written and not only is it an informative response to image buyers but also instructive to professional photographers or those aspiring to become so.

I just finished shooting for four weeks in the Swiss Alps and the Italian Dolomites. In large part this trip was planned to gather a collection of images for an exhibition starting December 16th in St Moritz at the Kunsthalle Galerie.

A selection of 15-16 limited edition large format prints  will be presented , mostly including images from the Engadin area in the Swiss Alps.

For more information including opening hours of the gallery please visit the Kunsthalle Galerie website.

New Blog – Road into the unknown

The idea to open a blog never really appealed to me. Not to say that I’m not informed of the advantages it offers. But social networking in general is not exactly my cup of tea.

However over time I saw the need to further facilitate communication and try new ways to expand the business side of my photography. In both cases it appeared that a blog might prove helpful in addition to the main command centre which has been my website.

Although it remains to be seen where this blog will lead, I will try my best to keep it regularly updated. Exhibitions, publications, travel updates and other news as well as the occasional rant or odd subjects will be on the menu…
